Must See! Senators And Reps Share N46 Billion Amid Economic Recession

As residents of Nigeria continue to groan over the effect of the country’s economic recession on them, senators and members of the House of Representatives reportedly share N46 billion annually as running cost, according to a report by Daily Trust.

The report says the amount which stands at over 40 percent of the National Assembly’s N115 billion annual budget, covers for the legislators’ running cost, including expenditures such as basic salary, vehicle maintenance, entertainment, utility, domestic staff, constituency, newspapers, recess allowance, wardrobe, personal assistant and housing.

Quoting from a document, the report said while each senator gets 109 gets N12 million monthly, each of the members of the House of Representatives gets N7 million.

This amounts to a monthly total of N3.8 billion monthly as the document showed that while the House gets N47.2 billion, the Senate gets N30.2 billion and the National Assembly bureaucracy N11.6 billion.

The legislative aides to the lawmakers also have a budget of N9.7 billion just as N9.5 billion is spent on ‘general service’.

Here is a list of other allowances available to a senator, according to RMAFC:

Accommodation – 150 percent of annual basic salary (N3.039m);

Furniture – 150 percent of basic salary (N3.039m);

Motor vehicle allowance – 250 percent of basic salary (N5.066m);

Motor vehicle maintenance – 50 percent of basic salary (N1.013m);

Personal assistant – 25 percent of basic salary (N506,600);

Domestic staff – 50 percent of basic salary (N1.013m);

Entertainment – 20 percent of basic salary (N405,280);

Utilities – 25 percent of basic salary (N202,640);

Recess allowance – 10 percent of basic salary (N202,640);

Newspaper/periodicals – 10 percent of basic salary (N202,640);

Constituency allowance – 125 percent of basic salary (N2.533m);

Severance gratuity – 300 percent of basic salary (N6.079m).

For the members of the House of Representatives;

Accommodation – N2.977m (150 percent);

Furniture – N744,454 (150 percent);
Motor vehicle allowance – N4.963 (250 percent);

Motor vehicle maintenance – N992,606 (50 percent);

Personal assistant – N496,303 (25 percent);

Domestic staff – N992,606 (50 percent);

Entertainment – N397,042 (20 percent);

Utilities – N198,521 (10 percent);

Recess allowance – N198,521 (10 percent);

Newspaper/periodicals – N198,521 (10 percent);

Constituency allowance, N1.488m (75 percent);

Severance gratuity – N5.955m (300 percent)
